How Often Should You Have Your Chimney Cleaned?

The frequency of chimney cleaning depends on how often you use your fireplace or wood stove and what you burn. Here are general guidelines for chimney maintenance.

Chimney cleaning is one of those maintenance tasks that is easy to put off — the chimney looks fine from the outside, the fireplace draws well, so why worry? The problem is that the real issue builds up inside the flue where you cannot see it.

Creosote is the main concern. It is a byproduct of burning wood — a dark, tar-like substance that coats the inside of the flue liner over time. Creosote is highly flammable. A chimney fire can reach temperatures over 1,000°C and cause serious structural damage to the chimney and the home. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys be inspected at least once a year and cleaned as needed.

How quickly creosote builds up depends on what you burn and how you burn it. Burning unseasoned (wet) wood produces far more creosote than well-seasoned hardwood. Slow, smouldering fires produce more creosote than hot, efficient fires. If you use your fireplace or wood stove regularly through the heating season, an annual cleaning before the season starts is a reasonable baseline.

If you burn frequently — several times a week through a long Northern Ontario winter — or if you use a wood stove as a primary heat source, cleaning twice a year (before and after the heating season) is worth considering.

Gas fireplaces produce less buildup than wood-burning units, but the flue should still be inspected annually for blockages, animal nests, and structural issues. A blocked gas flue is a carbon monoxide risk.

Chimney cleaning is also a good opportunity to inspect the flue liner, damper, firebox, and exterior masonry for any issues that need attention before the next heating season.
