Masonry Services in Lively, Naughton, and the Walden Area

The Walden communities — Lively, Naughton, Whitefish, and Copper Cliff — have a strong tradition of solid masonry construction. Here is what homeowners in these areas should know about maintaining it.

The Walden area — encompassing Lively, Naughton, Whitefish, and Copper Cliff — is one of the most geographically expansive sectors of Greater Sudbury. It includes a mix of mining-era homes, mid-century residential construction, and newer rural properties, each with its own masonry maintenance profile.

Copper Cliff in particular has some of the oldest residential masonry in the region, with homes dating back to the early twentieth century. Older brick construction of this era used lime-based mortars that are softer and more flexible than modern Portland cement mixes. Repointing these homes requires careful mortar matching — using a modern hard mortar on old soft brick causes the brick faces to crack and spall.

Lively and Naughton have a large stock of post-war bungalows and split-levels, many with original masonry chimneys and block foundation walls. Foundation parging on these homes is often at or past the end of its service life, showing cracks, hollow sections, and areas of separation that allow water infiltration.

Rural properties in the Whitefish and Naughton areas sometimes feature stone construction — fieldstone foundations, stone retaining walls, and decorative stone work — that requires a mason experienced with natural stone rather than standard brick repair techniques.

The Walden area's proximity to the lake and its more exposed rural setting means masonry here can face more severe weathering than in the urban core. Wind-driven rain and heavier snow loads accelerate mortar erosion and increase the importance of keeping chimney crowns and caps in good condition.
