Repointing vs. Tuckpointing: What Is the Difference?

The terms repointing and tuckpointing are often used interchangeably, but they describe slightly different processes. Understanding the difference helps you ask the right questions.

If you have been researching chimney or brick wall repairs, you have probably seen both terms — repointing and tuckpointing — used in the same breath. In Canada and the United States, they are often used interchangeably, but technically they describe different techniques.

Repointing is the broader term. It refers to the process of removing deteriorated mortar from the joints between bricks or stones and replacing it with fresh mortar. The goal is to restore the structural integrity and weatherproofing of the masonry. Repointing is one of the most common and cost-effective masonry repairs available.

Tuckpointing is a more specific decorative technique that originated in England. It involves filling the joints with mortar that closely matches the brick colour, then cutting a thin, contrasting line of putty down the centre of the joint. The effect creates the illusion of very fine, precise joints and gives older brickwork a sharp, refined appearance.

In everyday Canadian usage, when a homeowner asks for tuckpointing, they almost always mean repointing — removing old mortar and replacing it with new. True decorative tuckpointing is relatively rare outside of heritage restoration projects.

What matters most is the quality of the work, regardless of what it is called. Mortar selection is critical — the new mortar must match the strength and flexibility of the original. Using a mortar that is too hard on older soft brick can cause the brick faces to crack and spall. A skilled mason will assess the existing mortar and match the mix accordingly.
